Duty of loading WIPI is released, is iPhone really comming to Korea?

Posted: December 11th, 2008, by Yunho Chung

From next April, phones not loading WIPI, Korean Wireless Internet Standard Platform, such as Apple’s iPhone and RIM’s Blackberry could be sold in Korean market. Korean Communications Commisions announced that they will release the duty of loading WIPI on mobile phone in Korean market.

Even though Korean mobile market is very advanced, there not existed various mobile phone device because of WIPI rule. Most of phones in Korean market is provided by Korean mobile phone company including Samsung and LG. WIPI is the wireless internet platform only used in Korean market, so global company such as Nokia, Apple, and RIM doesn’t load WIPI on their phones.

I think that the abolition of WIPI rule means Korean mobile market is going to be more globalized.

With releasing the duty of loading WIPI on mobile phone, the possibility for introducing iPhone or Blacberry in Korean market is increasing. Many bloggers in Korea are excited that iPhone really come to Korean market soon. I also personally hope I am able to see these smart phones in Korea.

Yesterday, I phoned with Evan Ramstad, who interviewd me several days ago. I commented about Korean Communications Commissions’ policy for WIPI. Today I was exposed his article again. To read full version of article, visit here
